The Donghak Peasant Revolution of 1894 originated in Jeolla Province. The Imsil region, deeply connected to Donghak leader Choi Si-hyeong, was where Donghak believers and peasant soldiers rose up together and established a training center. Among the Imsil areas, Chojang Village in Cheongung-myeon was where Choi Si-hyeong, the second leader of Donghak, resided for an extended period and preached the religion throughout Jeolla Province. Many people converted to Donghak, and the movement rapidly expanded through blood relation. The rapidly expanding doctrines of Donghak, coupled with the Donghak Peasant Revolution's emphasis on equality and the eradication of corruption, led to its unification into the Donghak Peasant Revolution of 1894. Heo Seon, a Donghak leader, assisted Choi Si-hyeong in settling in Imsil and spreading the religion, and was a participant in the 1894 Donghak Peasant Revolution. However, there are few records of Heo Seon. His name is only briefly mentioned in research on Choi Si-hyeong and the Donghak Peasant Revolution in Imsil. However, no direct research has been conducted on him, and even his family relationships and personal details remain largely unknown. He died during a time when he should have been actively involved in the movement, following the change of name from Donghak to Cheondogyo in 1905. His descendants all left Imsil due to the persecution of Cheondogyo and financial difficulties, leaving no one to testify to his activities or provide relevant information. This dissertation seeks to identify the birth and death dates of Imsil Jeopju Heo Seon, his family and home site, and his relationship with Choi Si-hyeong.
